Vasilis Vassalos
Senior Academic Advisor - Technology
Vasilis Vassalos is a Professor of Informatics at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB), where he leads the Information Processing Laboratory and directs the MSc in Data Science. His research work is in the areas of Big Data Management, Medical ICT, AI and Machine Learning, and Middleware systems.
He was the founder of a pioneering middleware software company (now part of Oracle), and has been the Chief Data Scientist for two international technology companies and a faculty member at NYU, UCSD (visiting) and EPFL (visiting). He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the leading Greek telecoms operator, OTE, the Observatory of the Greek Information Society, and the Stakeholder Board of the EU FET Flagship «Human Brain Project».
For the past 15 years he has been advising, consulting and collaborating with the public sector and industry, and mentoring and investing in startups.
He received a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, and his MS and PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University.
