The E-Mobility Ecosystem: Who will win the race for the customer?

This project is the result of a joint effort between PwC Strategy& and Evolution Ltd. This project draws on PwC Strategy&'s deep expertise in a number of different sectors, from energy and transportation to automotive and infrastructure, and in Evolution Ltd’s deep knowledge of building digital ecosystems. This report focuses primarily on Austria and also Germany by way of a specific case-study, even though many of the findings and analyses will apply more broadly.

PwC Strategy& helped structure the thinking, illuminate the specific context and connect with leading executives in a working session in Vienna, late 2023. We would like to acknowledge the invaluable insights offered by the leaders of some key executives who participated in a day-long set of discussions: Markus Haidenbauer (ORASIS Industries), Christoph Knogler (KEBA Group AG), Martin Liebl (MIBA AG), Leonhard Schitter (Energie AG Oberösterreich), Peter Vysny (OMV AG) and Julia Weberberger (Energie AG Oberösterreich). In addition, the following experts from Strategy&, the global strategy consultancy of PwC, have significantly supported the work on this white paper with their valuable perspectives: Leo Allgoewer, Milos Bartosek, Philipp Rose and Jörn Neuhausen.

In terms of Evolution Ltd, this draws on work with UAE’s Majid Al Futtaim’s Group review of internal and external ecosystem strategy; with Globe Telecom (creator of the unicorn G-cash) and Business Forum CEOs in building new ecosystems in the Philippines; with Huawei on its ecosystem strategy in Europe; with Philips on policy issues in building healthcare ecosystems; and Lavazza on retail ecosystems. Evolution Ltd also benefited from concurrent projects with the Catalan government to support regional ecosystem development, and with the Japan Innovation Network and Synocus / Business Finland to catalyse ecosystem-based innovation.
